What zinc does in plants

Zinc supports enzyme systems, protein formation, hormone activity, and normal leaf and internode development. Because plants need it in small amounts, tissue and soil results are important when deciding whether a targeted zinc product or a broader micronutrient blend fits the program.

Recognizing a possible deficiency

Zinc deficiency commonly appears as shortened internodes, reduced leaf size, rosetting, or interveinal chlorosis on younger growth. Symptoms vary by crop and can resemble other nutrient or root problems, so confirm with representative tissue and soil samples before correcting.

Conditions that affect availability

• High-pH or calcareous soils that reduce zinc availability
• Cool, wet soils that slow early root uptake
• High phosphorus conditions that can intensify zinc limitations
• Sandy, low-organic-matter soils with limited nutrient reserves

Application considerations

Use the product label, crop stage, tissue results, water quality, and tank-mix partners to select a source and rate. Foliar zinc can provide an in-season response, while soil-applied zinc may fit preplant or fertility programs. Always run a compatibility jar test for unfamiliar mixtures.
