What iron does in plants

Iron is essential to chlorophyll formation, electron transfer, and several enzyme systems. Plants cannot readily move iron from older tissue to new growth, so availability is especially important during active canopy development.

Recognizing a possible deficiency

Iron deficiency typically appears as interveinal chlorosis on the youngest leaves while veins remain greener. High soil pH, bicarbonates, saturated soil, root injury, or low root-zone oxygen can create symptoms even when total soil iron is high.

Conditions that affect availability

• Alkaline or calcareous soils
• Irrigation water with high bicarbonates
• Waterlogged or compacted root zones
• Rapid growth that outpaces available iron uptake

Application considerations

Choose a foliar or soil-compatible source based on crop, pH, application method, and the label. Correcting the root-zone condition is important when chlorosis is driven by drainage, compaction, or bicarbonates rather than low total iron.
