What manganese does in plants

Manganese participates in photosynthesis and activates enzymes involved in plant metabolism. Adequate availability supports normal chlorophyll formation and crop growth, but its soil availability changes sharply with pH, aeration, and organic matter.

Recognizing a possible deficiency

Manganese deficiency often shows as interveinal chlorosis or mottling, generally on younger to recently mature leaves. Field pattern and crop species matter; tissue analysis helps separate manganese shortage from iron, magnesium, disease, or root stress.

Conditions that affect availability

• High-pH soils where manganese becomes less available
• Over-limed fields or alkaline irrigation conditions
• Cool, wet, or poorly aerated root zones
• High-organic-matter soils that can bind available manganese

Application considerations

Foliar manganese is often used when soil conditions limit availability or a timely correction is needed. Select chemistry and rate from the label and verified tissue results; do not infer a rate from the guaranteed percentage alone.
